AMMAN — Jordan has welcomed the UN Security Council’s condemnation of recent Houthi missile attacks against Saudi Arabia and commercial shipping, reiterating support for all measures Riyadh takes to defend its territory, citizens and infrastructure.
In a statement on Sunday, the Foreign Ministry welcomed the statement issued by members of the UN Security Council on August 7, which condemned missile attacks launched by the Houthi group against Saudi Arabia since July 13, as well as attacks on commercial vessels since July 22.
The ministry expressed Jordan’s full appreciation for the statement’s emphasis on the need to comply with international law and relevant UN Security Council resolutions, particularly Resolution 2216, and its rejection of actions that threaten regional security and freedom of maritime navigation.
The ministry reaffirmed Jordan’s full solidarity with Saudi Arabia and its support for all measures taken by the Kingdom to safeguard its sovereignty and security.
The Security Council warned on Friday that recent Houthi actions risked further regional escalation, threatened navigational rights and could undermine efforts to secure a political settlement in Yemen. It urged the group to refrain from further escalation and called for existing dialogue channels to be used to reduce tensions.
The UN Security Council on Friday condemned missile attacks launched by Yemen's Houthi group against Saudi Arabia and commercial vessels, and denounced unauthorised aircraft landings at Yemeni airports.
The council said in a statement that its members were concerned about heightened tensions in Yemen and stressed the importance of avoiding actions that could undermine efforts to secure peace or threaten international peace and security.
"The members of the Security Council condemned unauthorised landings of aircraft at Sana'a International Airport on 3 July and Hudaydah Airport on 13 July," the statement said.
It said that the landings occurred without permissions and clearances from the Yemeni government, in violation of international civil aviation rules.
