AMMAN — The first-half 2026 progress report on the implementation of the Economic Modernisation Vision’s Executive Programme for 2026-2029 highlighted progress in several energy sector projects.
In the field of green hydrogen, an investment agreement worth $1 billion was signed with Jordan Green Ammonia Company, supporting the development of green hydrogen and green ammonia projects in the Kingdom.
The project aims to produce 100,000 tonnes of green ammonia annually, with financial close expected in 2027 and commercial operations scheduled to begin in 2030.
An electricity purchase agreement was also signed for a project to construct two combined-cycle power plants, each with a capacity of 700 megawatts.
The report also noted that approvals had been secured from funding agencies to implement four strategic projects to supply natural gas to industrial cities, namely Al Rawdah and Al Muwaqqar industrial cities, the Al Hussein Bin Talal Development Area and Zarqa Industrial City.
Regarding exploration activities, drilling began on a new phase of wells under the Risha Gas Field development project. The first well has been completed, while drilling and technical evaluation of additional wells are ongoing.
The report highlighted progress in renewable energy and energy efficiency, noting that electricity connections were extended to 203 sites across the Kingdom under the “Fils Al Reef” programme at a total cost of JD1.813 million.
Under the same programme, 9,396 conventional street lighting units in municipalities were replaced with LED units at a cost of JD3 million, contributing to improved energy efficiency and lower operating costs.
Work also began on projects to install solar photovoltaic systems for municipalities across the northern, central and southern regions. The programme aims to install solar systems at 70 municipalities.
The value of grid-connected and off-grid solar energy system projects reached JD873,000, with 762 systems installed for beneficiaries of the National Aid Fund and low-income households out of a target of 1,086 systems.
The first phase of a project to install solar thermal water heaters at nine government hospitals was also completed, including the training of 20 engineers and technicians from maintenance teams. Technical studies for the second phase, which targets 15 additional government hospitals, have also been completed.
The report also noted that 4,026 solar water heating systems had been installed in households through approved financing mechanisms.
The programme’s electronic platform was upgraded and 40 cooperation agreements were signed with civil society organisations, with agreements with an additional 15 organisations currently under preparation.
Energy efficiency in the industrial sector was strengthened through the assessment of 13 applications from factories, the signing of five cooperation agreements and the approval of energy audit studies for six factories.
In the tourism sector, 18 hotel applications were assessed under the energy audit programme as part of efforts to improve energy efficiency and reduce operating costs.
The first phase of a project to improve energy efficiency in government buildings was also launched, covering nine ministries. Technical and financial proposals are currently being evaluated, while preparations are underway for a second phase targeting an additional six ministries.
